Seven

When I went to get breakfast the next morning, Frank the driver was missing. As I ate with the staff, I kept my ears open to see if any gossip about me and our boss. No one said anything directly, but Jessica mentioned that Tony had gone away for a few days. I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard. Eventually I would have to talk to him about his kiss and what it meant, but I had more time.

After eating, I took my dishes into the kitchen and thanked Alika for another great meal. I already had my scrubs on, so I headed to see Tony Sr. He was all smiles when I walked in the room. His foot was still elevated, which was good, but he was smoking a cigar. The acrid smell overpowered me and couldn't be escaped anywhere in the room.

“Do you mind putting that out, please?” I asked.

“What? You're kidding, right? It's not like you're a real doctor. You're just here for my foot, sweetheart.”

“I thought your leg was broken.”

“You know what I mean. Leg, foot, arm, it's all the same to me. Hey, you could give me an anatomy lesson later if you want,” he said then snickered.

“I don't think that's appropriate, Mr. Stone.”

“Whatever.”

“Look. I need you to put the cigar out. We're going to practice walking.”

“I don't need practice,” he slurred. “I can walk just fine.”

“Have you been drinking?”

“Just a little.” He started laughing at something.

“You shouldn't be drinking this early in the morning, or at all really.”

“Well, fuck it. I feel fine.”

“Look, I'm not going to argue with you about this. I'll have a talk with your son.”

“My son?” Tony Sr. started laughing.

“What's so funny.”

“You're pretty dumb for a nurse.”

I cocked my head to the side a little and stared at him. “What are you talking about?”

“Tony ain't my son. He's paying me damn good money to act like his father.”

The old man continued laughing as I rushed out of the room. What the hell? A flood of emotions raced through my body as I tried to figure out how to process them all.
